The ruins of Machu Piccu are the most preserved in the world. What you see nestled in the thick mountain forest is a REAL and almost whole Inca city protected also by the pristine Vilcanota River Valley. Lima is an old city founded in the 1500s by Francisco Pizarro. It’s main city attractions are old Spanish type colonial buildings like the PLaza de Armas which is the Presidential Palace, the Office of the President of Peru. You can watch the changing of the guards there — much like that of the Swiss guards – at 11:45 every morning. There is also the Lima Cathedral which took almost a century to rebuild. This Cathedral seems to be jinxed because building it was from 1564 and it was completed in 1622. However, it was later destroyed by an earthquake which hit Lima in 1746 .It was rebuilt again in 1755 and the interesting thing that you can see there is the remains of Pizarro (founder of Lima) under a glass coffin.

Peten is where you find the largest tropical rain forest in Central America. It is also one of the UNESCO Heritage sites like Tikal, because there are also hundreds of Mayan and Aztec ruins and artifacts preserved in this area. The land surrounding the lovely Peten lake is inhabited by descendants of the Mayas.

Why Tikal? It’s the largest excavated archeological site on the American continent. It’s like a large gemlike sphere discovered under 222 feet of the surrounding forest. This excavation, undertaken by the University of Pennsylvania took 13 years to unearth. It is believed that the “big gem” that was discovered is part of the dome (or roof) of an old Mayan temple. Before the excavation, there were legends of a lost city which was swallowed by the forest at Tikal.
